Where will Belinda go?
Affordable housing is a real and very present issue for communities across Canada. There is excellent work being done for the most vulnerable citizens, and it is agreed that more work is needed, HOWEVER… what about the regular folks who are in the low to middle class income status?
Do you know someone who just got evicted from their rental unit and is looking for a new home? If you do, you probably know these kind of stories well, and they aren’t pretty!
Recently, in my real estate job, I met a young female while previewing an income property for a potential sale, let’s call her Belinda. As I entered her basement unit, Belinda burst into tears. She was instantly stricken with fear and sadness as the reality of having to move set in. What I didn’t know was that she had already started looking for a new place when the landlord told her that I was coming to visit. There wasn’t much inventory, and the apartments she did find were 50% higher in price than what she was currently paying! Can you imagine suddenly having to pay, (in Belinda’s case), $520 more per month?
It turns out that Belinda was only 1 month into a 12 month lease and cannot be evicted just yet, but next year, there is a possibility she might find herself in the same position. Where will she go?
This is where Radical Housing comes in. There are countless stories like Belinda’s, young couples who are just starting out, divorced or separated parents, the elderly, and even immigrants. You have heard the stories, and may have a story of your own. The truth is that there are not many accessible programs or practical solutions for regular, hard working citizens. These citizens have jobs and are supporting themselves but because the housing market has rocketed out of control, people like Belinda are left to fend for themselves.
Radical Housing is using a simple yet radical idea to generate affordable homes by giving home owners an incentive to build basement apartments and rent them out at affordable rates. An affordable rate is defined as 80% of market value, and also no more than 30% of the gross household income.
Simply put, we will build your basement apartment at no cost to you, and share part of the rent with you. We will manage the entire job from permits to tenants, you just need to supply an unused basement.
Call, message or email us for more information about how your basement can be the answer to affordable housing.
So what about Belinda? With your help we can supply a home for her and many others like her by this time next year.
